The Coastal Pacific Train: New Zealand’s Most Dramatic Rail Journey Along the Kaikōura Coast

19 day small group New Zealand tour travelling through the South Island

If you've ever wanted to watch the Pacific Ocean crash against towering limestone cliffs from the comfort of a train carriage, the Coastal Pacific is your answer. This breathtaking rail journey hugs the northeastern coastline of New Zealand's South Island, delivering scenery that feels almost too dramatic to be real.

For Australian travellers joining an escorted small group tour, this is one of those experiences you'll be talking about for years.

The Route: Picton to Christchurch

The Coastal Pacific runs 348 kilometres between Picton — the charming port town at the top of the South Island — and Christchurch, New Zealand's largest South Island city. The journey takes approximately five and a half hours, and almost every minute of it is spectacular.

The train operates seasonally from September through April, making it a wonderful addition to spring, summer, or autumn itineraries.

What Makes It So Special?

Unlike most train journeys where you're travelling through the interior of a country, the Coastal Pacific keeps the ocean in view for much of the trip. At certain points, the tracks run so close to the cliff edge that the Pacific Ocean feels almost within arm's reach.

The Kaikōura Peninsula is the star of the show. Kaikōura sits where the mountains meet the sea in one of the most striking settings in New Zealand. The town is famous for whale watching, dolphin encounters, and enormous colonies of New Zealand fur seals that lounge on the rocks right beside the train tracks. Keep your camera ready.

Leaving Picton, the train passes through the sun-drenched Marlborough region, home to New Zealand's most celebrated Sauvignon Blanc. Rolling vineyards stretch across the valley floor — beautiful and surprisingly serene.

The Seaward Kaikōura Range rises dramatically inland, reaching over 2,600 metres. Snow-capped peaks on one side, crashing ocean on the other. It's a combination found almost nowhere else on earth.

As you approach Christchurch, the landscape softens into Canterbury farmland and the pretty Waipara wine country.

A Journey Reborn

The Coastal Pacific has a resilient story worth knowing. In November 2016, the Kaikōura earthquake — a magnitude 7.8 event — caused massive damage to the rail corridor, closing the line for nearly two years. The repair effort was extraordinary: over 300 slips were cleared, hundreds of kilometres of track repaired, and the line was eventually restored.

Travelling the Coastal Pacific today is also a quiet celebration of that recovery — and Kaikōura itself has come back stronger, with a thriving tourism scene and some of the best seafood in New Zealand.

Why It Suits Escorted Group Travel Perfectly

The Coastal Pacific pairs beautifully with an escorted itinerary because it naturally connects two of the South Island's key destinations — Picton and Christchurch. Rather than driving the coastal highway, you simply sit back, relax, and let the views come to you. Your escort handles transfers, luggage, and all the logistics.

Tips for Enjoying the Journey

Sit on the right side travelling from Picton to Christchurch for the best ocean views. Visit the open-air viewing carriage for photography — nothing beats fresh air and an unobstructed view. Have the seafood chowder if it's available in the buffet car — Kaikōura is famous for its crayfish and seafood. Bring a light layer, as the viewing carriage can be breezy even on warm days.
